To evaluate the effect of information gain accomplished by a prenatal leaflet series prepared by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in collaboration with the Maternity, Infant Care–Family Planning Projects of the New York City Health Department, for a specific group of women attending two of the Project Centers in New York City, four groups of pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 29 were studied. Two groups received the leaflet series and two did not. One of each of the subgroups was pre and posttested; the other two groups were posttested only. A questionnaire, which incorporated the content of the pamphlets, was developed, and reliability was established through a pilot study. No differences in information level among the groups were found, but clear differences in correct responses were found between the groups who had achieved a 12th-grade education and those who had less.
