Further Studies on Oral Administration of Living Poliomyelitis Virus to Human Subjects

Abstract
61 children, inmates of an institution for mental defectives, who had no antibodies against type II poliomyelitis virus, were fed 5 ml. of 20% suspension of cotton rat brain and spinal cord infected with the TN strain of poliomyelitis virus. No clinical signs of illness were noted and viremia was absent in every case. In 29 children the virus was isolated from the stool from the 5th to the 20th day after feeding. Specific antibody rise was observed in most of the patients.
