T. inornata can be easily established as a laboratory colony. Although the larvae may be cultured by feeding them pablum, Purina dog chow, and other proprietory products, the most satisfactory method of rearing is in a semi-balanced aquarium supporting their natural food. Blood-feeding is necessary for normal egg-laying. A new generation can be obtained in about 30 days at a temp. range between 60[degree] and 70[degree] F. This temp. range proved to be more satisfactory than one between 70[degree] to 85[degree] F. 14 vigorous captive [female][female] lived an average of 95.79 days and produced an average of 700.79 eggs of which approx. 98% were fertile. Females reared in the aquarium were perhaps more vigorous than wild ones.
