The Organic Elements of the Enamel

Abstract
An analysis of present knowledge suggests that the process of decalcification is the most critical single step in the isolation of the organic framework of highly calcified structures. Demineralization of mature enamel without distortion of the organic matrix is helped by the use of dilute acids, and acids which at the same time act as good protein fixatives; by combination of acids and fixation fluids; by the suppression of forceful CO2 formation (for example by using low temp and/or elevated atmospheric pressure); and finally by immobilization and prevention of rapid dialyzing action in the presence of organic surface membranes. Procedures and an apparatus based on these principles are described, and the text and illustrations present examples of successful recovery of the organic framework of mature human enamel.
