Porphobilinogen and [6-14C]-porphobilinogen are synthesised by modification of an earlier route, the key step being the high-yield transformation of a readily available β-acetylpyrrole (4) into the corresponding methoxycarbonylmethylpyrrole (2b) with thallium(III) nitrate in methanol.
