New Features of the Vortex-Ring Transition

Abstract

A novel experimental technique has been used to study how charge carriers in superfluid helium produce quantized vortex rings. Measurements taken over a wide range of temperature, pressure, and ${\mathrm{He}}^3$ impurity concentration reveal several new features of the vortexring transition, and indicate that some commonly made assumptions about the nature of the transition may need revision.
