Abstract
A historical account of the development of the 1- and 2-stage prothrombin tests is presented and the influence of the classical theory of coagulation is indicated. The work which led to the preparation of a standardized thromboplastin reagent is briefly described. The clinical application of the 1-stage method to the bleeding in obstructive jaundice and in the newborn is mentioned.
