Abstract
Protein is not absorbed entirely as amino acids, but also in the form of higher hydrolytic products. The polypeptide quotient (Q), or [image] for portal blood and for arterial blood varied somewhat (41-77) with the kind of protein ingested (9 proteins were fed), but followed closely the Q of the corresponding small intestine (midway) chyme. The angiostomy studies do not support the Danielewsky theory of plas-tein formation as a special process occurring between breakdown and synthesis during protein absorption. In the portal blood the absorbed amino acids appeared chiefly in the erythrocytes, the polypeptides mostly in the plasma. Decreased absorption with a higher Q for whole blood occurred when 30-min. of muscular work followed feeding; in the portal blood plasma amino acids decreased and polypeptides increased. Only slight changes occurred in the Q of the corpuscles.
