Abstract
The interband contribution of the optical conductivity of molybdenum has been calculated in the range of 0.0 to 5.5 eV based on the indirect and the direct models using constant matrix elements. Both calculations show comparably good agreement with the experimental data. The contribution to the joint density of states from transitions restricted to a narrow window about the Fermi level was also calculated in the two models. Again, similar results were obtained. A comparison of these to the frequency derivative of the imaginary part of the dielectric function shows similarities in critical structure. The indistinguishability of the optical properties for molybdenum computed from the two theoretical models suggests that for other systems, both models should be compared with the experimental facts. Keywords
