An attempt has been made to point out that the incidence rate and the prevalence rate are different measures of the frequency of occurrence of illness and should not be used interchangeably; to indicate that certain precautions should be taken prior to comparing the magnitude of rates in 2 populations or at 2 points in time; and to suggest that the measures of frequency of occurrence of illness used be precisely labeled.
