Abstract
Regeneration can be evoked experimentally in the adult frog if the number of nerve fibers available at the amputation surface of the forelimb is augmented by deviation of the sciatic nerve from the hindlimb. Growth of the regenerate is rapid and morphogenesis of a structure frequently showing striking limb characteristics is observed. Histogenesis of cartilage, muscle and connective tissue is evident in tissue sections. The theoretical considerations which led to these expts. emerged from the study of the importance of quantity of nerve fibers in regeneration of the limb of the salamander.
