At the beginning of germination in Polytrichum commune spores a clear lag phase is observed in the synthesis of chlorophylls. This synthesis apparently does not start until chloroplast replication begins, being correlated with the increase of the number of chloroplasts. The chlorophyll a to b ratio is 1.7 in the dry spores and it does not vary much during germination.
