Abstract
In the follow-up of 4430 patients who had received transfusion therapy, 134 cases of jaundice were discovered. Of these, 7 were fatal and 21 were severe with an illness which lasted 6 weeks or more. Of 2796 who received whole blood only (6210 bottles in all), 22 (0.8%) developed jaundice, suggesting that at least 0.35% of donors carry the disease. 453 received only large-pool plasma (each pool derived from at least 300 donors), and 54 (11.9%) developed jaundice. 396 received only small-pool plasma (each pool derived from 10 or fewer donors), and 5 (1.3%) developed jaundice. Keywords
