ADRENO-CORTICAL CHANGES IN SYRIAN HAMSTERS FOLLOWING GONADECTOMY

Abstract

Following gonadectomy the suprarenals of Syrian hamsters were characterized by the presence of small white spots. The cytological changes in the hamster cortex resembled the descr. of nodular hyperplasia reported in ovariectomized dba mice by Fekete et al. (Jour. Exptl. Med. 741. 1941). Testosterone propionate in 25 mg. pellets prevented the adreno-cortical changes. Previous observations of other workers are confirmed that in hamsters the suprarenals of males are absolutely and relatively greater than those of females, and that after gonadectomy there is a decrease in suprarenal wt. in males and an increase in females.
