The problems encountered in the evaluation of narcotic and sedative drugs in animals, volunteers and patients are considered. The overall assessment of a new drug is best accomplished by the study in depth of the primary effect and the main side effects, comparing these with a standard drug. The advantage of bridging the gap between animal investigations and clinical trials in man by volunteer studies is stressed.
