Intrapleural Instillation of Quinacrine for Recurrent Pneumothorax

Abstract
Intrapleural instillation of quinacrine hydrochloride was used to treat recurrent bilateral pneumothorax in a 29-year-old man with advanced pulmonary disease from cystic fibrosis. For 23 months and 11 months following intrapleural instillation of quinacrine into the left and right lungs, respectively, there was no recurrence of pneumothorax on either side. Death was due to pulmonary failure, and at autopsy there were dense adhesions completely obliterating the pleural spaces. This mode of therapy may provide a valuable alternative to surgery for the cystic fibrosis patient with severe lung disease and marginal pulmonary reserve.
