SEASONAL ANNULI IN THE CEMENTUM OF THE TEETH OF BARREN GROUND CARIBOU

Abstract

Annular growth layers in the cementum of the incisor teeth of caribou (Rangifer tarandus) consisted of light and dark zones. The seasonal deposition of cementum is such that each dark zone or rest line represents one winter season. Because cemental deposition in a permanent incisor does not commence until the time of eruption, about 8 months after birth, 1 year must be added to the number of growth layers in determining the age of an animal.
