Abstract
This paper is concerned with the succession on the Norfolk salt marshes and there is a general account of the British salt marshes. The succession is not simple, and is most complex on the east coast of England. The salt marshes of Gt. Britain fall into 4 series Those on the east coast, the south coast, the west coast and the Irish coast. The general vegetation is probably controlled primarily by the soil. The vegetation cannot be regarded as forming a climax formation; under suitable conditions it passes first to reed swamp and thence to a woodland climax.
