Protection of Escherichia coli against Ultraviolet Radiation by Pretreatment with Carbon Monoxide

Abstract
CO-treated aerobic cells of E. coli exhibited approx. 13 times the resistance of untreated controls when exposed to u.-v. radiation. Strictly anaerobic cells were not protected. These findings substantiate the thesis that the protective mechanism is due to the reduced state of the enzymes which result from the treatment.
