Abstract
Light from high‐power lasers perturbs the energy levels of atoms by virtual interaction. The first quantitative measurements of this effect are presented. A light pulse from a Nd laser with a power of 150 MW/cm2 shifts the 5461‐Å line of mercury towards smaller wavelengths by 0.1 Å.Keywords
