Venous Shunts in the Cephalic Sinuses of Horned Lizards

Abstract
Ligation of the internal jugular veins of horned lizards imitate the normal function of the internal jugular constrictor muscles. Pressure in unligated vessels ranges from -0.5 to +1.0 cm water. Closure of both jugular veins results in cephalic venous pressures of 6.0 to 7.0 cm water. Closure of the internal jugular veins opens a lateral shunt to the external jugular vein.
