Abstract
Ligation of the internal jugular veins of horned lizards imitate the normal function of the internal jugular constrictor muscles. Pressure in unligated vessels ranges from -0.5 to +1.0 cm water. Closure of both jugular veins results in cephalic venous pressures of 6.0 to 7.0 cm water. Closure of the internal jugular veins opens a lateral shunt to the external jugular vein. This shunting of blood is related to regulation of head temperature.
