Electron Microscopic Observations in Hydatidiform Mole

Abstract
An electron microscopic study of 3 hydatldlform moles of 3 1/2 months gestation was made. In addition to recognizable syncytium and cytotrophoblast, a transitional cytotrophoblast was observed In which there were incomplete cell membranes and numerous Isolated desmosomes. The syncytial tropho-blast was characterized by abundant mlcrovllll and plnocytotic vesicles, indicating its great activity in the incorporation of fluids. Lip id material and well-developed ergastoplasm always seen In the syncytium suggested that syncytial trophoblasts are engaged in protein synthesis and storage in contrast to the cytotrophoblast, which is mainly concerned with the production of new syncytium.
