A CHEMICAL STUDY OF THE BLOOD OF THE DEVELOPING CHICK

Abstract
Changes in the concn. of blood constituents were investigated from the 9th day of incubation until the 3d day after hatching. The blood was withdrawn from the vitelline vein, or, in the case of hatched chicks, from the jugular vein. The blood sugar is increased beginning with the 16th day of incubation. Increase in the uric acid concn. is observed much earlier in the developmental period. Similar increases are observed in the concn. of cholesterol and Hb, and in red blood cell counts, with the exception of a definitely lowered level during the hatching period.
