Abstract
This sp. is a shrub or dwarf undershrub represented by vars. latifolia parvifolia and angusti-folia in Gt. Britain. It is abundant on salt marshes and sea walls up to the line between Berwick and Duddon estuary. Submergence and drainage control its lower limit on the marshes and possibly necessity for occasional inundation, the upper limit. Young plants do not tolerate water-logging. The n. limit in the British Isles may be detd. by summer isotherms of 60[degree]F. Var. latifolia occurs in primary successions, var. parvifolia in subsidiary seres. It is less frequent on grazed marshes. Max. germination occurs in fresh water and it falls rapidly with increasing salinity. Insects and fungi associated with the spp. are listed.
