It is shown that the elastic and total cross sections for π--p collision above 1.0 Bev can almost be explained as the shadow effect of the inelastic collision. Based on this result, we discuss whether or not the second maximum of the total cross section for this reaction can be interpreted in terms of inelastic scattering.
