Abstract
The distribution of S. coronatus and S. araneus in Switzerland and France was studied using the osteometric analysis of the mandibles, a recently perfected technique (Hausser and Jammot, 1974). The practicability of this method is discussed. Specimens (1101) from 207 localities were examined, adding to the cytological information previously obtained for 65 localities. S. coronatus and S. araneus are not sympatric, except possibly on the northeastern limit of the 1st species''s distribution range. The latter seems to progress eastward and to exclude gradually S. araneus, except in the mountains where isolated populations remain and, to a lesser extent, in damp areas.
