Abstract
The concept of compatibility, as applied to marriage, is criticized for mixing evaluation with description, for referring to many heterogeneous phenomena, and for not corresponding to any major distinctions among kinds of couples. It is also suggested that use of compatibility as a concept tends to encourage a particular set of marriage ideals, notably including the idea that marriage is a task to be accomplished as coolly and scientifically as possible. Keywords
