Surgery in Complete Occlusion of the Internal Carotid Artery

Abstract
Fifteen cases of complete thrombotic occlusion of the internal carotid artery were investigated clinically together with carotid arteriography and ophthalmic artery pressure measurements using the Bailliart ophthalmodynamometer. Surgery was performed on each of the 15 cases. In only 5 cases could back flow be established, but this did not result in additional clinical improvement as compared with cases in whom operation was unsuccessful. The technique of removing clot from the internal carotid artery together with some angiographic pitfalls are described in the text.
