THE PHOSPHATIDES OF HUMAN PLASMA. I. NORMAL VALUES DETERMINED BY PAPER AND COLUMN CHROMATOGRAPHY

Abstract
Thirteen plasma samples from 7 normal fasting subjects were analyzed for the major phosphatide constituents[long dash]lysolecithin (5.2-9.5 [mu]g P/ml plasma, 6.9-11.7%), sphingomyelin (11.6-20.6 [mu]g P/ml, 17.6-24.3%), lecithin (30.9-71.2 [mu]g P/ml, 64.0-73.2%) by means of quantitative paper chromatography. The values obtained are in general agreement with published results obtained by the use of column chromatography. Combined column and paper chromatography, a more laborious procedure, permits quantification of the 3 major phosphatides as well as the minor phosphatides inositol-phosphatide, phosphatidylethanolamine and lysophosphatidylethanol-amine.
