A Study of Variation in a Chromogenic Asporogenous Yeast

Abstract

Torula pulcherrima was grown in giant colonies started from single cells. From variant sectors and secondary colonies new single cell isolations were made to start new giant colonies. In this manner a number of variant forms were selected out. Red and white, smooth and rough variants were encountered. These variations occur independently. Rough forms were associated with rudimentary mycelium. Although the variants tended to breed true, no completely stable variants were obtained. T. pulcherrima is entirely asporogenous, therefore these variations are independent of sexual reproduction.
