Abstract
The magnetic properties of the compounds DyCd, DyZn, and some ternary compounds DyCd1−xZnx have been studied. At 4.2 K the compound DyCd shows a field dependence of the magnetization characterized by a strong increase for fields higher than 15 kOe. This increase of the magnetization is not reversible but is accompanied by a large hysteresis without involving a remanent magnetization. This behavior has been explained by a model in which DyCd is considered to be a ferromagnet in which a special type of lattice imperfection can provide sites of easy nucleation and/or strong Bloch wall pinning.
