The Human Intraocular Penetration of Methicillin

Abstract
Patients undergoing routine ocular surgery for various conditions were given varying doses of methicillin by continuous intravenous infusion 24 hours prior to surgery. At time of surgery aqueous and blood were obtained. These fluids were subjected to bioassay for antibiotic activity by the plate inhibition method. Methicillin did not penetrate the normal human blood aqueous barrier in effective concentrations. In one case with moderate inflammation of the anterior segment and in both eyes of a diabetic patient, significant methicillin concentrations were found.
