EPR spectra of Cr3+and Cr+centres in the linear-chain lattices, CsMgCl3, CsMgBr3and CsCdBr3

Abstract
The EPR spectra of a series of impurity centres containing Cr3+ which occur in crystals of CsMgCl3, CsMgBr3 and CsCdBr3 have been observed and analysed. Some form of localised charge compensation is required when chromium enters the CsMX3 crystals in the trivalent state. The magnetic properties of the Cr3+ centres are noticeably dependent on the mode of charge compensation. Uncompensated Cr3+ centres are produced when crystals doped with divalent chromium are exposed to X-rays. In some cases the irradiation also produces centres containing Cr+. All of the spectra can be accurately described by axial spin-Hamiltonians. The magnetic parameters of the various chromium centres are discussed in terms of the structures of the centre and the host crystal.
