Abstract
A purified diet containing sulfathiazole produced a hemolytic anemia of variable intensity which could not be completely reversed either by pteroylglutamic acid or by xanthopterin in any of the doses used. Rats on. a purified diet containing succinylsulf athia-zole developed leucopenia together with an inhibition of growth which responded to pteroylglutamic acid but not to xanthopterin. In similar rats on a purified diet containing succinylsulfathiazole, but made anemic by repeated hemorrhages, pteroylglutamic acid induced definite erythropoietic, leucopoietic, and growth responses, while xanthopterin was inactive.
