A RAPID CELL VOLUME ASSAY FOR FUNGITOXICITY USING FUNGUS SPORES

Abstract
A method is described for screening compounds for toxicity based upon inhibition of growth, as measured by hematocrit technic, of spores of the fungus Myrothecium verrucaria. The assay requires only a 3-hr. incubation as compared with the 24 hrs. or 5 days required for technics in current use. While the technic is particularly adapted to measurement of fungistatic properties, fungicidal or disinfectant characteristics can also be detd. easily. In addition to speed, a significant feature is the elimination of aseptic precautions.
