Single-crystal absorption spectra of crystal field bands of bivalent vanadium ions in vanadium dichloride and related environments at low temperatures

Abstract

Visible and near-i.r. spectra of single crystals of VCl₂, KVCl₃, and V²⁺ doped crystals of CdCl₂, KCdCl₃, and NaCl at temperatures down to those of liquid helium are reported. Methods of preparing the compounds in high purity and suitable form are given. Vibrational effects and intensity anomolies found at low temperatures are discussed.
