The feasibility of inducing estrus in female rats for use as lures in sex research.

Abstract

By using injs. of 666 I. U. of estrogen (Theelin) in oil, artificial estrus was produced in rats, which then can be used as sex lures. In a study of 15 [female] rats with daily injs. for 15 days, a very large percentage (mostly 100%) of them copulated with [male][male]- The authors suggest that this means of producing receptive [female][female] for studies on sex is very much less expensive than the customary way of maintaining a large colony of [female][female] and spending much time locating the receptive ones for a given day''s expt.
