Planning a Cancer Control Program for Older Citizens

Abstract
Most cancers are diseases of the aging. Approximately 50% of all cancers occur in persons 65years of age and older. Because of the paucity of information about knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of older people about cancer, researchers at the Fox Chase Cancer Center surveyed 335 persons 60 years of age and older on these topics. We found that the elderly hold a number of false beliefs and negative attitudes that might keep them from seeking treatment for potential cancer symptoms. We report here on the survey findings and on the education program which was developed on the basis of those findings.
