Theory of spin-polarised inhomogeneous relativistic electron systems. II

Abstract
A critical comparison of the authors earlier theory with a recent alternative theory of MacDonald (see ibid., vol.16, p.3896, 1983) is given. After correcting some errors in the previous work, new analytical results are presented here. Most importantly, it is pointed out that the authors theory is renormalisable and relativistically invariant in contrast to MacDonald's theory. His results for the leading-order relativistic parameter are the same as the authors present results since he did not use his theory in this regime. The physical picture associated with the theory of spin polarisation in a relativistic theory is spelled out in greater detail than before. It is found that the total exchange energy and the exchange potential change sign for different sets of values of the relativistic and magnetisation parameters.
