A social determinant of the level of aspiration.

Abstract
This investigation concerned the effect upon level of aspiration of one social determinant: knowledge of the performance of other groups. In the first experiment, such knowledge was furnished the subjects before they had a first-hand acquaintance of the task. Under this condition, the aspiration-level of the subjects was changed. In the second experiment, knowledge of the performance of other groups was furnished only after considerable experience with the task. Results showed that the aspiration-level was not changed. The difference in results is discussed in terms of the concept of "frame of reference." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
