Abstract
An index of the secretion of thyroid hormone may be obtained by measuring the rate of loss of radioactive I from the thyroid gland of the rat. The validity of this index is suggested by the effect of such influences as thyrotropin, thiouracil, thiocyanate and thyroxine. Secretion is markedly inhibited by the admn. of quantities of thyroxine of the order of 10 ug. With lower doses of thyroxine a relationship between dose and degree of inhibition of thyroid hormone secretion may be demonstrated. Based on these facts a rapid and simple procedure for the bioassay of thyroid prepns. is proposed.
