Effect of Thiazides on Carbohydrate Metabolism in Patients with Hypertension

Abstract
THE present report concerns a systematic investigation of the diabetogenic effect of the thiazide drugs. Its purpose was threefold: to obtain additional data concerning the clinical nature and severity of this effect, for although a number of case reports have appeared, few planned studies are available1 2 3 4 5 6; to study the incidence and development of "thiazide diabetes" in a hypertensive population in whom the drugs are used widely and among whom the concomitant existence of diabetes mellitus is not uncommon7; and to investigate possible mechanisms of this iatrogenic change in carbohydrate metabolism.
