Age of Ohakea Terrace, Rangitikei River

Abstract
Gravel with logs of wood at Rangitawa Stream, Wellington land district, that has been radiocarbon-dated at 3,000 years before present was previously correlated with the gravel of the Ohakea Terrace. Loess is absent above the gravel with logs, but about a foot of loess overlies typical Ohakea Gravel. Most of the loess was probably deposited towards the end of the Last Glaciation, little being deposited during the last 3,000 years. The gravel with logs is considerably younger than the Ohakea Gravel and was probably deposited by a flash flood
