Surgery of Extensive Cancer of Paranasal Sinuses: Presentation of a New Technique

Abstract

This paper is based upon our experience with paranasal sinus resections for cancer, which we had the opportunity to perform during the period of July, 1953, to December, 1959, at the Central Institute of the Associacão Paulista de Combate ao Cancer in São Paulo, Brazil. The poor results obtained through the routine surgical procedures led us to the standardization of a new technique for the treatment of these malignancies. We believe this new surgical procedure will improve the prognosis of advanced paranasal cancer. Clinical Considerations Cancer of paranasal sinuses grows within a bone cavity which makes it inaccessible to direct inspection. During the initial stages the symptomatology may be confused with sinusitis or neurological disturbances referring to the fifth cranial nerve.
