Abstract
Summary For a long time, pelvic relaxation has been recognized in conditions of rectal prolapse, but only recently has perineal relaxation been recognized as a cause of common anorectal dysfunction. We employed combined rectovaginal procedures effectively in 21 of 28 patients, but they presented several problems. A surgical procedure has been described to repair perineal defects and rectocele transrectally, either as a primary procedure or in conjunction with other anorectal surgical procedures. One hundred fifty-one cases in which this procedure was utilized are reported. Results and complications are discussed. The procedure has provided gratifying results in 80 per cent of our patients, including many who had chronic problems. Complete failure occurred in 3 per cent. Keywords
