DIETARY MANAGEMENT OF ALBINO RATS BEFORE AND AFTER THYROPARATHYROIDECTOMY

Abstract
The preoperative management period varied from 10-100 days; the postoperative from 24-48 hrs. The reactions of old animals to thyroparathyroidectomy was related to their diet; longer preoperative management of old than of young animals probably accounts largely for regarding age as a factor influencing parathyroid tetany. Ca(OH)2 proved to be superior to CaCl2 in preventing tetany during the first 48 hrs. following thyroparathyroidectomy. The accessory tissue hypothesis was not necessary to explain the variations in the tetany which was precipitated.
