Abstract
The seed or fruit of Anethum graveolens L. was studied for its biological effect on the adults of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Lasioderma serricorne (F.), and Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val. The acetone extract of the seeds was not toxic on contact to C. maculatus , but was toxic to S. oryzae . However, it was not very toxic to L. serricorne and T. confusum . Both the pulverized powder and its acetone extract applied to wheat at 2 and 0.5% by weight, respectively, highly repelled S. oryzae . Dosages of 1 and 0.5% of the powder, and 0.35 and 0.15% of the extract also repelled the insects. When applied to paper at dosages from 680 to 85 μg/cm2, the extract greatly repelled T. confusum . At the lowest application rate of 85 μg/cm2, it still showed class-III average repellence for a 2-month period against the insects.
