The Growth of Pseudomonas in Blood Cultures

Abstract
Slotnick, Irving J., and Sacks, Harry J.: The growth of Pseudomonas in blood cultures. Am. J. Clin. Pathol. 58: 723–725, 1972. Trypticase soy broth and thiol broth were tested under aerobic and anaerobic growth conditions for their ability to support the growth of 33 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, six strains of Pseudomonas maltophilia, 2 strains of Pseudomonas stutzeri, and 18 strains of unspeciated Pseudomonads. In all cases, only the aerobic culture bottles gave positive growth. Pseudomonads remained viable in the anaerobic culture bottles throughout the test period but were unable to divide and multiply to any significant degree. Preliminary studies with isolates characterized as Mima-Herellea indicate that these grow much like Pseudomonads.
