We were unable to detect neutral proteinase activity in rat ovarian follicle walls near the time of ovulation. The proteolytic activity of cathepsins at acid pH was readily detected, as was the neutral proteinase of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. It thus appears that the rupture of the ovarian follicle at ovulation is not mediated by a proteolytic enzyme stored in the tissue.
