Electronic excitations in adsorbed alkali metal layers

Abstract
Adsorption of Na and K on Ni(100) and Na on Ni(100)c(2 × 2)S was investigated by electron energy-loss spectroscopy in conjunction with measurements of work function changes and lateral adatom distributions. The electronic excitations observed were found to be characterized by their dependence on the surface density and charging state at the adatoms. Tentative models concerning the nature of the electronic excitations are discussed.
